What better way to start a weekend than with a detox!
The definition of a detox according to the Oxford Dictionary:
“A process or period of time in which one abstains from or rids the body of toxic or unhealthy substances; detoxification.”
This is how I decided to start my Saturday last week.
Living a vegan lifestyle of mostly raw fruit and veg with the odd treat of a vegan pie or burger, I found that I wasn’t at the best level of health I could be at.
Can I do a detox?
I was thinking that it may have been pretty straight forward to just go on a water fast, but I was a bit concerned about getting my daily macro- and micronutrients in order to function in my office job, run back home in the afternoons and still be a productive mom and wife at home.
I had already learnt that the body is usually pretty good at getting rid of toxins via the skin, liver and kidneys. If your daily diet and lifestyle is filled with junk and stress - just like a sewerage pipe - if it gets blocked, bad things are going to happen!
Some of the usual detox symptoms would be headaches, lack of energy, diarhea and constipation…why would anyone want to go into something knowing that this could happen?
But I had to look past those short-term possible detox symptoms and see the whole picture.
In the beginning...
The first day wasn’t too bad. I must prepare you though: the morning mouth washing with the probiotic powder was nothing compared to the evening digestion and elimination fiber drink! But I persevered.
Although most detox programs will suggest certain meals during the day or even have their special “detox drinks”, I wanted to do this the right way, first time. I wanted to be sure that I wasn’t putting anything in my body that wasn’t supposed to be there.
And this will continue after I have finished.
I do have some ideas for some nice cleansing and maintenance smoothies though that I will be working on this week - I will do another blog soon on this.
The long-term benefits of a good detox can include:
Cleanse the liver and other detox organs - giving them a break to self-heal will let them get back into action
Reduce inflammation - when you reduce digestion issues, you reduce inflammation issues
Gain more energy - when you first start your detox, there may be a slowing down. Your body is using this period to repair and restore. Once the the toxins are out and everything is functioning the way it should, it leaves more energy for you to use effectively elsewhere
Assist with weight loss - with a detox and subsequent lifestyle change, your body’s digestion and elimination processes work much better. This allows your body to absorb maximum nutrients and will be able to rid itself of unwanted fat.
A clear skin will be something to look forward to - as our skin is one of our detox organs, be prepared for some skin issues as you start your detox. But keep at it to see improvements
Clear mind - having clarity of mind goes a long way in helping you in your day-to-day functioning: work, driving, socialising. These toxins, which our bodies are desperately trying to get rid of, are literally sucking your brain dry!
This lead me to check with Garden of Life and see what product that they have, that would see me through this detox.
